6 Months
February 8th, 2010
Today Kisa is 6 months old. We're already halfway to a whole year!
Probably Kisa's biggest achievement lately is her graduation to "solid" food. She's eaten both rice cereal and barley cereal. Each time we give her a new food, it takes her a couple feedings to warm up to it, but she's doing very well. She makes a HUGE mess, and she loves to help by grabbing onto her spoon each bite. The other night she was really tired during dinner, so when I gave her a bit she helped hold the spoon, got some on her fingers, and then rubbed her eyes, thereby getting baby food all over her face. This probably happened ten times. It was an epic mess.
Kisa has also mastered the art of rolling over both ways. I think we're seeing signs of much expanded transportation, because she's getting better at stringing some together, and also just squirming and wiggling around to move distances or face new directions. I think we're going to have a mobile infant, soon.
It's pretty incredible that Kisa has yet to have a cold or infection of any kind. It's been such a blessing to have a healthy baby. I think that Ciara is doing an excellent job of taking care of her and keeping her healthy. I think a lot of it also has to do with the fact that Ciara is still nursing. I'm really thankful that Ciara has learned how to breast feed and has stuck with it. Even at our last doctor visit, our doctor pointed that she just looks healthy when you look at her. Her weight is great, and she's not too skinny or too plump.
Unfortunately, this is also a second milestone: today marks the day that Ciara and I have more or less not had a full night's rest for 6 months. Kisa is getting better at sleeping for longer stretches, but they are still very inconsistent and she still always wakes up at least once. Ciara gets up with her most of the time, but I've been trying to bear the burden a bit more, because Ciara is pretty tired on a regular basis. I can't really remember what it's like to actually sleep all night long. We've adjusted to it, but I think we're both tired most of the time. Kisa's latest thing is to wake up right around 4AM, perfectly happy and babbling and talking to anyone who will listen. Such things are cute after 8AM, and not before. I'm going to really, really appreciate it when Kisa lets us sleep all the way through the night.
I've been asked a number of times what my favorite thing about being a dad is. Since Kisa is 6 months today, I've compiled my entire list right here:
- Holy mother of mercy, Kisa's head smells like the greatest thing I've ever smelt. If I could bottle this scent and bathe myself in it daily, I certainly would.
- The moment when I'm rocking her to sleep, and she finally relaxes and nuzzles her head in my shoulder.
- The quick, loud breathing when she's excited about something.
- Her happiness to see me coupled with bashfulness.
- Her smiles when looking at or petting Zeus.
- The aforementioned spoon holding to "help" during dinner.
- The wide eyes and open mouth during a startling or new experience.
- The pouty lip that comes out before a sad cry.
- Her grasping and scratching to feel and explore new textures.
- Her wonder of seeing and holding new objects.
- The constant display of how to grab and suck on your own toes.
- Being greeted with huge smiles when I get her out of bed in the morning.
- Holding and comforting her after bonked heads and doctor's shots.
- Group hugs with the three of us.
- Her worried and confused face as she looks at me when held by other people.
- The high pitched raspberries and bubbles she blows.
- The immediacy with with every objects moves toward her open mouth.
- Conversations about her day.
- A happy and healthy family!
Life, Kisa

I really like reading her a story and seeing her eyes look at things. She is very inquisitive, and when I carry her around I like to follow where her eyes look.
I'm excited to see her roll over this weekend, I haven't seen that yet!
