Best Picture Nominees

February 2nd, 2010

There's ten of 'em.

The ten nominees for the Academy Award for Best Picture were released:
No surprise with Avatar, and it was really nice to see District 9 on the list, one of my favorite movies of the last year. Up is also another surprise for me, even though I do think it was a great movie. We just recently watched Inglorious Basterds, and like just about every other Tarantino movie I've seen thus far, I was left thinking at the end "What the heck was the point of that?" I haven't seen most of the other nominees.

But...what in the world? The HANGOVER? The freaking Hangover is a nominee for the BEST PICTURE of the year? My jaw is hitting the floor as I type this. We watched the Hangover, and it was pretty good movie, as far as comedies go these days, but what in the world?? How in the heck does this movie make the cut for best picture? I have no understanding of this.

Thoughts?

UPDATE: As was pointed out in the comments, The Hangover did not actually make the list. All is right again in the world.

94! I agree, Dumb and Dumber is awesome.

has anyone seen Precious? I've heard SO much about it but haven't talked to a single person who's seen it.

I'd vote for District 9 - it was easily my favorite movie last year. I was so excited to see it that I went to it alone and it lived up to every expectation I had.

Second on my list would be The Hangover. That movie is the new Dumb and Dumber for me (which also should have won an Oscar back in 199x)

A) I loved the Hangover.

B) If I were in the Academy I would vote for a tie between Avatar and District 9. Either way there is no doubt in my mind that both will end up on the top 100 somewhere down the line.

Okay, it looks like some false lists have been floating around the net. It's correct now.

I somewhat enjoyed Avatar but not nearly as much as District 9. I think the hype of Avatar's technical acheivements moved it up the list. Based on story alone it shouldn't be there as it is a rehash of a number of stories.

The guy that played the main Nazi in I.B. is up for an Oscar and totally deserves to win. He was my favorite part of that movie.

I'm glad to see Up on the list. I thought it was one of the best movies of last year. Great story, funny, good animation, etc.

The movie not on the list that should have been was Star Trek. They dismissed it so easily, yet everyone I talked to loved it. It belongs there before Inglorious Basteds does.

I'm planning to watch The Hurt Locker this weekend. Heard good things.

Phew! Thanks for pointing that out. The site I first saw the list on must have been having a bit of fun. I'm extremely relieved.

You might want to check your sources... the Hangover definitely did NOT get nominated for Best Picture.

Some of these things don't make sense. You never know what nominators are thinking. Last night, I watched a documentary about the founder of the street gang, "Crips". Stanley "Tookie" Williams was convicted of murdering 4 people in robberies. When in prison awaiting execution, he was nominated 4 times for the Nobel Peace Prize! By comparison, the nomination of "The Hangover" for best picture seems like a great choice. I know, apples and oranges, but I sometimes like to mix things that don't go together.
